Pittsburgh is the first city in the US where testing for autonomous vehicles was approved for city streets. The city is home to the largest number of autonomous vehicle companies, with presence of Motional, Uber ATG, Aurora, Argo AI, Locomotion, and Tier 1 suppliers like Bosch.
Pittsburgh is also the birthplace of AI and autonomous driving. Local universities like Carnegie Mellon University have been pioneers in this domain, starting with the DARPA grand challenge, and its faculty and staff have been responsible for creating most of the autonomous vehicle startups. Several of these startups are headquartered in Pittsburgh or utilize the difficult driving conditions of Pittsburgh city streets as their testbeds. The city is poised to become the hub of next generation mobility.
